I actually had two loaves of bread to take to book club. (phew)
Where we left off.....my mixer was going to knead the bread for me....for 20 minutes. Check. And the motor didn't blow out or anything.
The dough was not looking exactly as Vivian described, but she kept saying how sticky the dough was ...and 'do not add more flour'!!! I didn't. I'm following directions, remember?
Let dough rest 10 minutes. Check.
Incorporate 1/4 of the caramelized onions into dough by pulling each of four 'corners' of the ball (does a ball have corners?) of dough over the pile of onions in the center. Let rest 15 minutes.
Repeat three more times.
Let the whole sticky mess (my words, not hers) rest and rise an additional 2 hours and 40 minutes. (I'm seriously running out of time by now.)
Dump risen dough onto floured board (boy am I glad I didn't leave out the 'floured' step! sticky, ooey, gooey!) and divide in half. Let rest 10 minutes. (This bread got a whole lot more rest than I did.)
Shape into round loaves. At this point, I had two sticky lumps of dough oozing all those caramelized onions. No way was I going to be able to shape them into doughnut shaped loves with a hole in the center. I skipped this step. But, I did let them rest again.
Into the oven....each on its own baking sheet, one in the upper third of the oven, one in the lower third. 15 minutes...switch. Another 15 minutes. (Have you been counting how many pots, pans, baking sheets this recipe tooK?)
Ready or not.....Just a quick photo op and I'm out the door to deliver bread for the dinner. (If you aren't following this whole thing...read the previous post!)
Everyone liked it....most everyone wanted to take some home. To me, it needed more flour and more baking time. It definitely didn't need to rest any more.
It was OK.
Would I ever make this again? NO.
In the amount of time it took to make this, I could knit another pair of these.
The bread was delicious and I love those gloves!

I am going to suggest this idea to my book club. We always have something to eat, so it could work. Love the mitts, put them in my library.

Recipes that require so much work and loonngg steps have been a let down for me in the taste department. Maybe it's just that by the time I get to taste it, I am so over the entire experience....
Love the fingerless gloves-you are one amazing knitter!

Your mitts are pretty! I like to cook, but not using recipes with that many steps!

Your bread looks fabulous. It's cold here today. I should have made bread!
Those are amazing mitts.

Both the bread and the mittens look delicious. After all that work, I'm glad the bread was a success. I don't mind long recipes with many steps, IF, they turn out in the end. However, I wouldn't choose that recipe. The older I get the better the cooking path of least resistance looks to me.

Oh this did make me giggle. I think I need a rest after following that. What a lot of work for bread. My husband is quite good at making bread, cool large hands is the key I think. I'm pretty hopeless at anything that doesn't come out of a Better Crocker box!

LOL! What a saga! That recipe was definitely more work than I want to do on a loaf of bread! LOL! The mitts are gorgeous!! Time well spent. ;) blessings ~ tanna

love the mitts.

It does look delicious but then I didn't have to make it.. Dump all the ingredients in the bread machine and press 'Go', that's about as far as I can manage!

That is a labor intensive recipe but boy do those loaves look good. Not as pretty as the mitts though!
