There are times when the knitting and the reading just align perfectly....and this is one of them. On the needles is Climb Every Mountain....a very straight-forward pattern that doesn't take much concentration, allowing for page-turning, belly-laughing reading. For the Love: fighting for grace by Jen Hatmaker is my intergenerational Sunday school class's choice for the new year, and it's a gem. We read Anne Lamott's Grace (Eventually) in the fall. Both authors are hilarious; both authors nail it when it comes to contemporary 'grace'. All the music references in this one go completely over my head. I definitely relate more to Anne...she quotes James Taylor and Carol King...and she's not as conservative as Jen. (Old hippie??? moi? maybe.) I'm still liking this book.
A new-to-me magazine....Flow, could easily become my favorite magazine of all times. It's Danish, began publication in 2008, and how it ended up at our local Books-A-Million is a mystery. So far I've read every word (including the ads) and that NEVER happens. With magazines I'm more a picture-book kind of 'reader'. Speaking of which---Selvedge just arrived in the mail today (NO chance that one would ever make it to BAM!!!)....haven't even cracked the spine....saving it....something to look forward to. The styling is always magnificent.
And finally....in anticipation of my next knit (a very, very boring, beige top-down all stockinette sweater for hubby which he chose and is actually rather excited about ) I have The Big Truck That Went By: how the world came to save Haiti and left behind a disaster by Jonathan M. Katz waiting in the wings. This was going to be my travel book.*
joining Ginny for yarnalong.
*I just found out today that our planned trip to Haiti the beginning of February has been cancelled. Hubby and I were last minute add-ons to the team that is still going. A plea went out early last month asking for a tech-y person (that's hubby) and a (gopher/educator...that's me!!!);instead they needed a trained team-leader. (That's neither of us!) I will go to Haiti someday. The need there isn't going away any time soon. The book looks really good!!! I'll be ready.
I'm sorry about the canceled trip, but I know one day I will read that you are headed there.
I have book club on Thursday where we will pick our twelve books for the year, I hope your books are on the list.
Are you feeling better? I hope so.

I love, love, love Ann Lamott, so will now be putting Jen Hatmaker on my "to read" list. I bet that book about Haiti is also very interesting. I will keep an eye out for that one too! Hope you have a great week and weekend, and that you are able to go to Haiti and help out there soon. There are so many places and people with great need in the world. We all must do what we can. Enjoy the rest of the week.

Some great books happening for you. The peek of the knit is wonderful. :)
I am so sorry about your trip to Haiti being canceled. What a brilliant positive attitude you have about!

Haiti will need you always. Glad the knitting fading duo is working out? I love it when that happens.

What a disappointment that your trip was canceled. Life has twists and turns like that. I'm sure you will go someday. I admire you for wanting to go. It will be an emotional journey!

Love Anne Lamott and have heard great things about Jen Hatmaker's new book. Now I am longing for another week of Christmas week just for reading.

That's a bummer about your trip. It just wasn't your time to go. When you go is when you're needed to go.

I am sorry to hear that your trip was cancelled, but how wonderful you are to be so willing to help. Isn't it funny how excited men can get about the MOST boring knitting we can produce?
PS - I LOVE the top photo of Freddy in your previous post - what a doll. (a ball band, poop eating doll, but never mind. We all have our quirks...)

It sounds like you have that magical combination of reading and knitting happening. I'm envious and intend to have a slice of that cake this weekend. Hope you have a lovely one with good story and even stitches :) Knowing you, you're probably done with that knit already, ha!

So sorry about your trip! But another adventure is in store for you. I can just feel it!!
I saw that Flow magazine today at Barnes & Noble. I was going to buy it - until I saw the $22.00 US price! Yikes! I've spent $14.00 on a magazine before - so $8.00 more isn't too much of a stretch. I passed today, but may get it the next time....

I am sure that you will make it to Haiti one day, too! There's so much that still needs to be done there and many projects started but never completed.
Love the color you are knitting for Climb Every Mountain. Will have to see if I can get a copy of Flow.
